Turkmenistan is the second largest Central Asian country and is bordered by the Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan, Iran and Uzbekistan. A large part of the country consists of the Kara Kum Desert which is one of the largest sand deserts in the world and to the south fringed by the Kopet Dag mountains which forms a natural border with Iran.
As like with many countries in this region, it proved to be irresistible to any army and seemed to be invaded, settled on and invaded again by any conquering army that felt like it. It all started with Alexander the Great stopping off on his way to India, then it was the Roman's turn to set up camp near present-day Ashghabat and so the list goes on, but all of these experiences ensure a wealth of history & culture are not forgotten
In 1991 along with Azerbaijan it gained it's independence from the former Soviet Union, and has never looked back. Turkmenistan is one of the cheaper countries in the region. But as the country has it's own relatively unexploited oil & gas deposits it is proving to a magnet to Oil & Gas companies and no doubt hotel rates will increase at some stage. All of these features mean that the summers are extremely hot and the winters are bitterly cold.

It sits at the edge of the Black Sands ( Kara Kum ) desert and at the foot of the Kapet-Dag mountains and is arguably not the prettiest city in the world but it still has it's own special charm and the mountains make an interesting back drop. It was founded in 1881 and became the countries capital city. The highlight of any ones stay is without doubt the Tolkuchka Bazaar, which seems to spread for miles across the desert. It makes for an interesting stroll around the various market stalls seeing just what is on offer.
For the historian or archaeologist the remains of the vanished cities of Nisa & Anau just sit outside the city and once Royal hunting reserve Firuza is now a popular mountain retreat.
Sheraton Grand Turkmen,Four Points Hotel, Nissa Hotel and Turkmenistan Hotel.

An archaeologist's dream. Once one of Central Asia's greatest cities. Here you will find the remains of 5 walled cities each from a different period in history.
Enclosed by mountains and looking out over the Caspian Sea and Central Asia's only port with links to Europe.
One of the hottest places in Central Asia. Here you will find the Repetek Desert Research Center with it's own visitor's centre, a herbaruim and museum.
Is tucked away in the eastern corner of the country and sitting between the Amu-Darya and Uzbekistan. It is home to gorges, waterfalls and cave complexes. Right on the Uzbekistan border you will find the Kugitang reserve whose pride & joy is a rock plateau imprinted with the footprints of hundreds of dinosaurs dating back to the Jurassic period.

Turkmenistan is generally calm but it's neighbour Afghanistan is still the site of military operations. So travellers are advised to stay clear of all areas that border on to Afghanistan. There are also some areas within Turkmenistan, which are off-limits. Travellers should also be aware of the risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be against any civilian target.
Travellers should carry their passport at all times and requests to produce proof of identity by the police are frequent.
Visitors should not overstay their visa and must register with the Ministry of Registration if staying for longer than 3 days.It is also suggested that travellers register their stay with the British Embassy during their stay.
Finally there is also a ban on trekking to certain areas of the Kopet Dag Mountains due to it border with Iran.
It is strongly recommended that travellers obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance prior to their arrival.

Tap water is unsafe if not boiled and filtered, and you should try to drink only bottled water. Typhoid and Hepatitis A are endemic. Due to the extreme temperatures in the summer (up to 50 Celsius in the shade) drink plenty of water, as dehydration is common. Medical facilities are very poor and health insurance is essential. Ensure that all your inoculations are up to date. Seek medical advice before travelling.
If you plan to visit southern areas of Turkmenistan (next to the Afghanistan border) between June to October, you should seek advice before your departure on anti-malarial medication.
We recommend that all travellers check with their GP prior to departure or refer to the Department of Healths website.
