Is the countries capital city, which sits either side of the Varder River. It was formerly a major trade route between Belgrade & Athens, which made it a popular attraction for any army who fancied their chances. The Romans, Slavs, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Normans, Serbs and Turks have occupied it. Despite the cities extensive history there is not much left to see of the centuries past glories. This is due to the 1963 earthquake, which devastated the city, but what does still remain allows an interesting look back.
The city is a walkers dream with much of the central district being strictly a pedestrian zone. The 6th century KALE still stands guard from its hilltop over the city and visitors are rewarded with excellent views out over the city. A 15th century Turkish stone bridge stretches out over the Vardar River connecting the old town with its more modern brother.
Some of the cities main tourist attractions include the 15th century DAUD PASHA TURKISH BATHS, the bustling OLD MARKET, interesting CITY ART GALLERY, the CHURCH OF SVETI SPAS with its beautiful carved iconostasis, and the MUSEUM OF MACEDONIA has many interesting exhibits.
Skopjes vibrant OLD ORIENTAL BAZAAR or CARSHIJA is known for its delicate shops, which sit astride winding cobbled streets where you can sit outside sampling a cup of Turkish coffee. On the outskirts of this quarter you will find the KURSUMLI HAN, where you can visit the inn used by the traders.

Is a must see for any visitor who appreciates history combined with beauty. This ancient city sits on the shores of the peaceful Lake Ohrid and is considered the most beautiful city in the entire country. It is one of the oldest European settlements and was formed in the7th century and the surrounding area was included in the UNESCO directory of the worlds cultural heritage.
It is home to several good quality hotels as well as some remarkable sights and attractions such as the ancient Slav Monastery of ST.PANTELEJMON with its 800 Byzantine style icons, the cliff top CHURCH OF ST.JOHN, the famous CATHEDRAL ST.SOFIA with its magnificent frescoes, as well as various 10th & 11th century monuments, various ancient ruins, an ancient out door theatre and the remains of 7 early Christian churches.

One of the countries most popular winter sports retreats. It sits on the beautiful Shar Mountain and only 35km from Skopje. The region offers excellent skiing, good hotels and a beautiful environment.
This National Park occupies area of 300 square miles which offers deep canyons, snowy peak, dense forests, and deep blue lakes. It can be found the West of the country, 100km from Skopje and between the Korab, Shar and Bistra mountains. These ranges include some spectacular areas of natural beauty with the highest waterfall in the Balkans, some beautiful caves, and numerous glacial lakes.
The National Park is home to the beautiful RADIKA GORGE which spans 15 miles which offer its visitors a selection of spectacular landscapes.
Pelister is the oldest and 2nd largest national park in Macedonia and has developed into one of the countries leading tourist destinations and a popular ski region. The region is home to many mountainous peaks, delicate fauna, vast forests and varied wildlife. From this national treasure you able to see the PELAGONIA VALLEY, PRESPA LAKE, as well as the mountains of NIDZHE, GALICHICA,JAKUPICA AND BITOLA, 2 peaceful mountain lakes.
The 2nd largest lake in the country is also one of the highest lakes in the Balkans with one third shared by its neighbours Greece & Albania. It is also one of the few ecologically protected areas in the Balkans. The region is famous for the CAREV DVOR fruit orchards, various festivals, the CHURCH OF ST.GEORGE with its excellent 12th century frescoes, various ancient settlements and its great natural beauty.
An ancient town and is considered to be a cultural capital and has developed into a popular tourist destination. The town is famous to the Struga Poetry Festival which is the old, largest and most famous festival of its kind in the world. The town is home to several cultural monuments such as the 15th century MONASTERY OF KALISHTA with its beautiful frescoes.

British nationals living in Macedonia or intending to travel to the northern and western border regions of Macedonia should exercise caution. British nationals should also be aware of the risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, in all countries of the world, against civilian targets in public places. The vast majority of visits to Macedonia are trouble-free.
Sporadic violence can be a problem in Skopje, Teyovo and Gostivar.Travel in North & West Macedonia should be restricted to main roads and in daylight hours, also please be vigilant as these areas do have an unexploded land mine problem. The border with Serbia & Montenegro is a military zone and some ethnic tensions in the Kosovo area can erupt.
Pickpockets and bag snatchers are known to operate at Skopje's airport and main shopping centres. Foreign nationals appear to have been specifically targeted in street robberies. Credit card fraud is widespread and caution should be exercised when making a purchase using this method. Avoid crowds and demonstrations generally. Keep a low profile, vary times and routes of travel and ensure that travel documents are current. Remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
You must declare all foreign currency on arrival. Failure to do so may result in detention and forfeiture of funds when attempting to leave Macedonia.
British nationals visiting Macedonia for a period of two weeks or more are advised to register with the British Embassy, Skopje.
Travellers should also consult the Foreign Office for up to date travel information prior to arranging any travel to Macedonia. This information is current as of 10/5/04
