BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA

As with its neighbours Serbia & Montenegro, the recent troubles has left its mark on the country and devastated the economy. But don't let that fact fool you, as because the economy is a bit flat doesn’t expect to get cheap hotels in Sarajevo. At certain times of the year these can be as high as the rest of Europe. But the general cost of living is good with many restaurants offering good value for money and many bargains can still be found. A usual tip to remember is that Bosnia-Herzegovina is generally a cash only destination, which means that credit cards are not widely accepted.

The countries climate is a blend of every good about the Mediterranean and everything bad about Eastern Europe. This means that the summers are generally pleasant but the winter months can be extremely cold.

But the country is doing a great amount of work to promote the country in the right light. They have rewarded for that work with the result that travellers have just began to visit the country once more.

Travel Warning

There continues to be a threat to Western and British interests in Bosnia and Herzegovina. You should exercise caution in public places, in particular in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, shopping malls, business centres and places of worship. The Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in co-ordination with the international community, has made a great effort to put in place effective measures to prevent terrorism. Finally when walking around Sarajevo always keep to paved lighted areas.

Despite the fact that the Dayton Peace Accord officially ended the civil war, the risk of trouble still exists due to occasional political acts of violence and general crime. Travellers should also avoid any gatherings or demonstrations.

There is also a large amount of unexploded land mines especially in isolated areas. All travellers should use caution and vigilance in the Republika Srpska, where there are some anti Western feelings can surface.

We strongly recommend that visitors obtain comphrensive travel insurance prior to departing the U.K.
